Pulmonary Rehabilitation and Outpatient Respiratory Therapy Programs
Individuals with chronic pulmonary disease find the specialized care and support they need at Melissa Memorial Hospital’s Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program. Our clinician works with you to improve your health and reduce your risk of future pulmonary disease and medical complications. Patients will go through a complete evaluation, educational, and exercise components on an outpatient basis.
This program may help you:
~ Better understand your condition.
~ Develop methods to cope with your disease.
~ Develop your perception of well-being.
~ Decrease the number of times you go to the hospital.
Conditions treated
The Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program is open to people who have a chronic pulmonary disease that affects their ability to breathe and their quality of life.
You may be eligible for the program if you are living with one or more of these conditions:
~ Asthma
~ Bronchiectasis
~ Chronic bronchitis
~ COPD
~ Cystic fibrosis
~ Emphysema
~ Lung transplant
~ Neuromuscular disease
~ Occupational or environmental lung disease
~ Post-thoracic surgery
~ Pulmonary fibrosis
~ Pulmonary hypertension
~ Respiratory failure
~ Sarcoidosis
About the program
During your experience, you are guided in how to improve your overall health and well-being and reduce your risk of future pulmonary exacerbations. Methods and activities might include:
~ Breathing and relaxation techniques.
~ Changing your physical activity habits.
~ Maximizing your energy level.
~ Learning about nutrition, disease processes, respiratory medicines, energy conservation techniques, oxygen therapy, and exercise techniques.
~ Participating in exercise reconditioning sessions.
~ Oxygen dosing.
You and our clinician will meet to go over the results of tests, program recommendations, exercise prescription, and any questions you may have. In addition, you may be given recommendations to talk to our local dietitian and mental health professionals to further your individualized care.
