Who We Are

Holyoke Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) covers a vast area of eastern Phillips County, including the towns of Holyoke, Paoli, and Amherst, among others. HEMS offers comprehensive 9-1-1 emergency medical care around the clock, every day of the week, utilizing the latest equipment and techniques in the field. Our team, comprising both full-time and part-time professionals such as emergency medical technicians (EMT), paramedics, registered nurses (RN), and first responders, is extensively trained in prehospital trauma and medical care, ready to assist our citizens when they need it most. Our providers are committed to the community, specializing in delivering empathetic care and ensuring the safety and comfort of our patients throughout their care.

It’s never a pleasant experience to visit the Emergency Room, but in case of an emergency, the MMH team is here to help you. Our dedicated team of providers is available 24/7, and whatever the reason for visiting the ER – be it injury, trauma, or illness – we will work quickly to determine the next steps. This could involve returning home, receiving care from our skilled nursing staff from the nursing unit, or transferring to a higher level of care. Our on-call support system, Avel eCare, ensures that our skilled staff is collaborating for the best possible outcomes.
You can rest assured that the MMH ER is committed to supporting your next steps.

When to consider using the ER:

  • Chest pain or difficulty breathing
  • Weakness or numbness on one side of the body
  • Slurred speech
  • Vision problems, such as double vision or loss of vision
  • Severe dizziness
  • Broken bones or dislocated joints
  • Head injuries, loss of consciousness, fainting, confusion, or seizures
  • Burns with blisters
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Uncontrolled bleeding
  • Larger cuts that may require stitches
  • Fever over 103 degrees or fever with a rash
  • Vaginal bleeding during pregnancy
  • Poisoning
  • Mental health crisis

Emergency Management Services

  • HEMS is an extension of the Emergency Department (ED) at Melissa Memorial Hospital. Therefore, the care we provide to our patients is the same initial care they would receive in the emergency room. To access our prehospital care, residents and visitors must call 911.
  • When calling 911, please provide specific information to the dispatcher regarding the nature of the emergency, who is involved, and the location. If possible, ensure that your address is clearly labeled to help us quickly identify the location of the emergency.
  • When we arrive on the scene, our team will ask several questions to assess the situation and understand the nature of the emergency. While time is of the essence, our experienced providers will simultaneously initiate definitive, lifesaving care to the best of their abilities.
  • We have several recent projects and activities, including the upcoming addition of Critical Care Paramedics, who will be able to provide additional care through an extended scope of practice. Additionally, we organize the Annual Holyoke EMS Golf Tournament, which raises funds for community projects. Keep an eye out for more exciting events in the future!

If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact us at (970) 854-2241.
